Why do some students consistently fail to clear prelims and some do it without extra ordinary effort

All Posts

hi Vinod.

Yes preparation is going on but I'm slow learner. I started with mains PYQ and with syllabus. I have to do test series as well(Insights textbook test series), where I have lot of portions to complete. And optional is also pending. I just read one book in my optional subject. Feeling scared whether I will be able to complete by march month? and Will I be able to attend 2021 prelims. From 2days I started to follow STHIR 2021 free Initiative.  Looks and sounds very easy. But really difficult. I'm pushing my self to give my best despite of my teaching work. I have not started essay and ethics paper. Can you please help me how to go about it. I read many toppers answer scripts. Really I'm worried whether I will be able to reach that level. I'm not good at answer writing and lack content when it comes to essay especially. I'm getting scared as the months are passing.

U are welcome pushpa ,hope ur prep Is going fine .

Hi dear ,
I stucked here ,so only can't able to reply u on time.
Yes if u are going with Kannada literature it's good if u find all the favourable way in it, also regarding joining coaching classes its up to u coz ,u only know whether u can study it or else u need to coaching to attain.
Regarding approach for Gs and optional ,do this it will work .
Gs:
Just do the past one year of insights secure and STD sources for separate subjects ,do paper wise , subject wise ,topic wise seperation .
Take atleast 10 years of PYQ of mains arrange them according to topic wise and subject wise in ur syllabus ,then start to study .
Now read the pYQ of that topic very with thorough understanding ,just analyse how question evolve ,get the mind of examiner and his demand ,then start to do that topic after doing that start to write the test .
Note: u should not study for pYQ question  ,but should study everything in that topic,PYQ are like giving u the framework that's it .

Follow this approach for optional as well initially .will let u know after that wat to do.
From this process u can find the major improvement gradually.

If u have doubts do let me know.

Happy learning ,stay positive.

Hey dear pushpa , hope u are doing good .
Don't worry will guide u to choose ur optional , below I provided my detailed suggestions , read it u will get the idea.

Here is my suggestion , first of all don't take anyone advice or suggestion to choose which optional u want, like many used to say this, it will be easy , that will be easy, its not the case.

Many use to choose optional depends on how upsc asks questions(trend-based optional selection),if they are asking continuously easy ,then one will fall for that subject ,by hearing someone(as they behave like gurubaba) advice or by their own. These are main don'ts while choosing optional Ok let me say ,how the optional can be chosen ,hahha here i am not going to "my subject opinion" or "my analysis of different optional" ,as it will be suitable only for me ,but iam going to show the best way, by urself to find the optional ,which "SUITS U".     >>1.Choose ur optional based on "ur own interest .eg- if u are interested to know more about international relationship ,then take PSIR ;>>2.The optional u choose should be like whenever u feel stressed , it should be read ,so that u may get rid of stress, destress ( sounds astonishing right ,but practicality it will be ,as many are there ,when are in stress ,they usually read some books ,to get rid of,which they get satisfaction of acquiring some useful things u like ,knowledge u wish etc;>>3. Depends on ur own strength and weakness, analyse urself , yes when took the optional eg: If u take public administration ,see ur weakness and strength in it ,if ur strength wins over it then go for it.For this if u found ur interested subject ,then u have to analyse ur strength and weakness in it ,then u have to go for it. Read the syllabus for it ,to know what is what, how u can proceed further.who know u may also read the exact syllabus ,u studied in college ,which will turn out to be ur strength .But if ur college subject is not ur strength ,then vice versa .;>>4.That "eagerness to study" , u should have that much eager to study , u should think of that subject only ,when ever u want give more on ,no other thoughts should ,get into ur mind while doing that, like when u get urself drowned in water ,u will think about only breathing ,that much eagerness to breathe should be there in ur subject . U should breathe ur eagerness to do that subject .These all the main things that u should keep in mind ,while choosing optional .Here I had guided "U to be URSELF" , don't forget the decision is urs.

All this what I said are converted like,
OWN INTEREST +DESTRESS + ANALYSIS OF URSELF +EAGERNESS = FAVOURITE SUBJECT .

I wish UPSC to change the name from "OPTIONAL SUBJECT" TO "FAVOURITE SUBJECT" ,which the best suits it . As students also will be very much aware ,while choosing optinal.
Haha who knows this post may turn into proposal by UPSC in future. So if u choose ur FAVOURITE SUBJECT ,Named as optional like this means, I AM  SURE ,EVEN U WILL GIVE TOUGH TO UPSC , WHATEVER TOUGH PAPER IT SETS For sure u will crack the exam,no matter what is ur age, what stage u are, what condition u go through , don't forget that every five fingers are not same , as every one will not be in same situation to face , but its "U decide the biggest power is U" , who can change the "crisis into opportunity", "Tragedy into Victory"Its all u , ur attitude will do., if u need any mentorship advice ask me dear."BELIEVE IN U". BEST OF LUCK,MEET U IN LBSNAA

I just worked on my selection of optional subject/favorite subject. I would like to go with kannada literature.
I think it fulfills all the requirements to be my favorite subject. I gone through the syllabus, and previous year question papers and also I read one novel-"bettadha Jeeva" which is included in Paper II . I felt I can do this if I give a right approach. Should I join any class for kannada literature? What are the sources and how to approach. ?currently I'm attending test series of insights(prelims) and working on it everyday along with my teaching job. I should also start working on mains GS papers and answer writing.so kindly tell me how to go about kannada literature and GS Papers.

Please help!
I am scoring 115-120 marks in GS-1 in upsc prelims 2020 but I am on the borderline in CSAT. I am good at maths but got 10-12 wrong out of 45 questions attempted. What should I do now?

Start to prepare for mains don't think about it

Hi dear puspha,
Hope u are doing good and fine.
Don't call me sir ,call me vinoth .
If u didn't clear prelims of last attempts ,it doesn't mean that u are not a serious aspirants ,instead I really salute and wishes to ur perseverance attitude ,for sure u will crack the exam with this kind of mind, for sure ur life on preparation for upsc  will be inspiring others,no doubt.
I will mentor u don't worry.
Now coming to ur preparation part ,really u have good amount of time for ur preparation apart from ur working hrs as u mentioned .
Spend atleast 5 to 6 hrs per day for ur preparation that's enough,Take sunday rest totally ,ur body needs some true rest to prepare urself for following week.
If u need to prepare urself for optionals, use from now on till jan to finish optionals and on month of feb do ethics along with other mains subjects like world his,IR,security issues etc till march half.
From march 16 onwards concentrate urself completely on prelims dear u would have around 100 days to get well prepared that's enough .
Now for this year prelims u would have done one year CA , don't leave that now ,u have to revise that too while doing ur optionals ,just revise them again ,as revision wont take much time ,as u are a teacher u may utilize ur free class time for revision apart from the regular study time which i told.
For daily CA spend one hour,do INSIGHTS DAILY CA ,along with solve CA quiz that's enough .

Really its possible u can do it ,if u have any query ask me dear ,happy to help u.

Stay positive ,meet u in LBSNAA

SIR YOUR SUGGESIONS ARE VERY HELPFUL.. CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST HOW TO PREPARE FOR 2021 WITH RESPECT TO PRELIMS 2020 QUESTION PATTERN... PLEASE HELP BECAUSE THIS WAS MY 3RD ATTEMPT AND I NEVER CLEARED PRELIMS .  I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN'T CLEAR PRELIMS AFTER 3 ATTEMTS , WILL I BE ABLE TO CLEAR ALL STAGES OF UPSC CSE ?  I AM GETTING VERY HOPELESS AND DEPRESSED.. PLEASE HELP ....

Why do some students consistently fail to clear prelims and some do it without extra ordinary effort

Hi oyster hope u are doing good.
The answer for ur question is simple ,if u are working very hard ,properly defining ur sources ,following ur mentor or ur senior(experienced in this field as serious aspirant) advice religiously will clear this exam .The word u used "without extraordinary effort" is not right in the sense that people will get right guidance plus their belief on that guidance ,which push them to put effort and they are succeeding .
Some people fail bcoz mainly due to fear of failure , unwanted pressure about upsc ,thinking too much .just feel free do the above steps u will be successful .

All the best ,stay positive .
