Why do you want to join the Civil Services? 18644 Views

This is the most expected question one will have to answer on UPSC Interview Board. The presentation of strong reasons to join Civil Services will give you an opportunity to impress the board. It reflects your core personality traits, your values, and your approach to life.

But more than answering to the board, this question gives a purpose to the Long and arduous Journey of the UPSC Preparation Phase. If we find a proper answer, no external motivation is needed. Reminding of that one answer everyday itself wakes us up from the inertia and indulgences. It is said that “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” It is not only about how big you are dreaming but also about how pure/ how incorrupt/ how selfless is your dream. When the fruits of your dreams are to share joy and peace with society, the whole existence will conspire to help you to achieve such visions.

We strongly believe every UPSC aspirant is a unique one and they must be having their interesting stories. We are curious to know from you. Hence, use this thread to openly express your dreams / your purpose to join the Civil Services. Your story may inspire many others.

There is no doubt that how prestigious a job this is. If I have to list a few reasons myself I would say,

1. It satisfies the patriotic zeal of mine. Just the thought that  I would be able to serve my nation fills my heart with great ecstasy and pride.
2. I as a person am very dynamic and so is this job. It will never let me get bored with it and will always keep me on my toes. This is a job that is full of diverse challenges every day.
3.I being an IAS officer will make my parents proud and happy. They are the very reason for my existence and if I will be able to make them proud by being an officer, I should do so.

I also have to do it for myself. I want to write a very exciting chapter in the book called life. I want to test how much I can do for others. I  first want to be the change that one day I wish to see in the world. I believe in the beauty of my dream. I'll do as much as I can in this very only life

Why I want to join civil services ?

Practically speaking, as of now my educational qualifications is just a normal graduation degree. My age is 23. At this age, and with this qualification, what is the top most thing I can do ? I can achieve in my life ?

There comes The Civil Service.

Considering my qualifications and age, I'm simply eligible to apply for the exam. That's why I looked for it.

There're also many other examination I can appear with my criteria, but what makes me to go for Civil Services is its vast opportunity of duties.

A Civil Servant, and for me, my aim to be an IAS officer, who has his own office, but he/she is never limited to that office alone.

You got to go in every lane and corner of the district you're posted in. From maintaining the law and order to providing justice for the commons. This job would drain out my capabilities, my strength, my will, to serve for the nation, and for the people, for their betterment.

An IAS officer is the one who makes the law, and also who implements it. It won't be wrong if I would say an IAS is the backbone of Indian administrative system. That's why the name Indian Administrative Service.

That's all I want to achieve in my life. That's why I want to join Civil Services.

hi Bidwan,
 This is so inspiring!

I have a few humble comments, kindly consider it if it is worth else please ignore it.

1)   This job would DRAIN OUT my capabilities, my strength, my will, to serve for the nation, and for the people, for their betterment.
-> In my humble opinion, this sounds little negative, intead if we use something like, This job would CHANNELIZE ALL mycapabilities, strength.., it might sound more positive!

2) An IAS officer is the one who makes the law, and also who implements it. It won't be wrong if I would say an IAS is the backbone of Indian administrative system. That's why the name Indian Administrative Service.

THAT'S ALL I WANT TO ACHIEVE in my life. That's why I want to join Civil Services.

-> In my small window of understanding, the last few lines summarized like becoming an IAS is the ACHIEVEMENT YOU WANT in your life. However, I believe there is more for us to do after becoming an IAS officer, which would keep us motivated to take this exam. Becoming an IAS officer is just an entry ticket to the gateway of opportunities lying ahead! In my humble opinion, this could have been better summarized! Kindly correct me if I had misinterpreted what you meant.

All the best!
May all your dreams come true!
